This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to get your own georeferenced imagery into World Wind. This tutorial will show you how to create tiles from a georeferenced image then create a layer for the tiles in World Wind. From there you can package up the layer as an add-on to distribute. This layer will be stored entirely on your computer. If you want to serve the tiles to others then this tutorial may not be helpful.

The organization of World Wind's tile system is summarized here. This tutorial assumes that you already understand how the tile system works and how World Wind's xml files work.

World Wind Geo: The Eclipse RCP Geobrowser

Welcome to World Wind Geo: The Eclipse Geo browser. The Geospatial Web or Geoweb is a relatively new term that implies the merging of geographical (location-based) information with the abstract information that currently dominates the Internet. World Wind Geo is an experimental geo browser built on top of:

    * World Wind Java SDK - http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/java/ : Allows developers to embed World Wind technology in their own applications.
    * Eclipse - http://www.eclipse.org/ : Eclipse is an open source community whose projects are focused on building an open development platform comprised of extensible frameworks, tools and runtimes.

Our goal is to close the gap between GIS & SIS (Scientific Information Systems) by incorporating low/med/hi resolution GIS datasets from multiple sources: NASA, MS Virtual Earth, and others with the java NetCDF library for plotting/subsetting capabilities of scientific data.

World Wind Geo has the following fetaures:

    * Interactive 3D navigation.
    * Full support for WMS 1.1.x and 1.3.x using wizards.
    * Over 500 real time weather data sets from NOAA and the Navy Research Labs.
    * Limited support for KML: Ground overlays, screen overlays, and placemarks only.
    * Support for animated ground overlays to visualize events over time.
    * Scientific Data Plot/Subset capabilities with NetCDF.
    * Open source: built on top of the World Wind Java SDK and Eclipse frameworks.
    * Highly extensible: It uses the eclipse plugin framework to extend the user interface.
    * Multi platform: built on proven standards: Java and Eclipse.

finally. nasa world wind java is out. i was wainting since january to play with it. it’s great that they moved from .net to java in order to get platform independent.

the sdk is very easy to use but the examples are horrible. three classes with a lot of swing and awt garbage. only 10 lines of code are really needed to get it working in processing.

you have to get the worldwind sdk and extract it. create the folders worldwind/library in processing’s libraries folder and copy the file worldwind.jar into it:
libraries/worldwind/library/worldwind.jar

    Dstile win port

    I have finally ported Nowak's dstile tiler to windows with FWTools as the supporting package. You need Fwtools installed.The dstile binary can be downloaded here

    There is a sample GUI too on what to expect.It has some permissions issues and may not work properly.You are free to build your own GUI if you understand Worldwind XML's.

Create Contour Lines with Point or Line Shapefiles
The creation of contour lines as background data for archaeological maps is useful taks. Contour lines help other archaeologists and the general public visualize the terrain in which a site exists. The ability to visualize a site in its natural setting is a useful concept when explaining complex ideas such as site formation or human-induced changes in the physical environment.

ArcGIS makes generating contour lines from elevation data easy. The elevation data is typically in the form of points collected by either a total station, level, digital theodolite, or some other type of surveying instrument. This tutorial assumes that the elevation data (either as points or lines) already exists as a shapefile. However, if you only have a table of points that you still need to enter into the computer, please see the Converting a Coordinate Table into a Shapefile tutorial by clicking here.

In brief, generating contour lines requires two main steps. Using elevation data (in point and/or line form) to create a triangulated-irregular network (TIN) - which is simply a 3D model of the terrain, and the using this TIN to compute the actual contour lines. One of the neat functions of ArcGIS is that it allows the user to define what interval the contour lines are computed.

The first step is to import the point or line shapefile into ArcMap. It doesn't matter how many shapefiles you have, or if you have a mix of point and line files. The program that creates the contours will merge data from numerous files. I used two files representing elevation points from consecutive years of mapping.



Once the shapefile has been imported, click the '3D Analyst' drop-down menu, select 'Create/Modify TIN' and click 'Create TIN From Featrues' which will open a dialogue box.



The dialogue box allows multiple files to be combined. The height source (elevation value) is computed from the Z value within each file.



Once the 'OK' button is clicked, the computer will computer the TIN and add it to ArcMap. Make sure you remember where you stored the TIN in case you need to use it again in the future.



The TIN in the above image can now provide the neccessary data for generating contour lines. The first step is to open the 'Spatial Analyst' drop-down menu and select 'Surface Analysis' and the click on 'Contour'



The contour dialogue box will open, it should automatically select the TIN created previously (named 'tin' in this example). You can set the contour interval in this dialogue. IMPORTANT: the interval is a product of the measuring system used to collect the elevation data, in other words, if you took measurements in meters, than one interval will generate one meter contour lines.



Select where you want to store the output shapefile (features) and then click 'OK', and ArcGIS will generate your contour lines.



There you have it, you have created contour lines for your site!

Digital Nautical Chart (DNC) Description: Digital Nautical Chart is a Vector Product Format (VPF) based database containing maritime features of digitally replicated

Nautical Charts derived from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) hard
copy of Coastal Charts, Approach Charts, Harbor Charts and General Charts for supporting geographic information systems (GIS) such as   our 3D GPS tracking Global Mapper and worldwide marine navigation systems.

NGA responsible for the Digital Nautical Chart or marine navigation chart, maintenance and VPF updates, is derived from approximately 5,000 charts divided into 29 Geographic Regions and currently available via the NGA Gateway or on

Digital Nautical Chart approved format VPF was chosen for ease of data manipulation and less data disk storage while allowing hyper linking to various data in simplicity viewing.

OSSIM provides advanced geo-spatial image processing for remote sensing, photogrammetry, and Geographic Information Systems.  Backed by an active open source software development community, OSSIM solutions have been deployed on a number of critical commercial and government systems.  Listed below are a number of links to help you get started:

Open Source Software Image Map (OSSIM)
OSSIM is a high performance software system for remote sensing, image processing , geographical information systems and photogrammetry. It is an open source software project maintained at www.ossim.org and has been under active development since 1996. The lead developers for the project have years of experience in commercial and government remote sensing systems and applications. OSSIM has been funded by several US government agencies in the intelligence and defense community and the technology is currently deployed in research and operational sites. The name OSSIM is a contrived acronym (Open Source Software Image Map) that is pronounced “awesome” – the acronym was established by our first government customer.

Designed as a series of high performance software libraries it is written in C++ employing the latest techniques in object oriented software design. A number of command line utilities, GUI tools and applications, and integrated systems have been implemented with the baseline. Many of those tools and applications are included with the software releases.

ossimPlanet
